Selected in-vitro assays confirm PortusanaTM's triple mode of action on glucose metabolism.
First, PortusanaTM significantly decreases the transport of glucose from the intestine into the blood stream into intestinal Caco-2 cells, a widely used model to study the intestinal absorption of compounds. This partial prevention of glucose absorption may be associated with a reduced glycemic load of food for the body. Secondly, PortusanaTM stimulates the uptake of glucose from the blood into fat cells in a dose-dependent way. Based on this finding it can be concluded that PortusanaTM mediates an effect similar to insulin, helping the body to lower blood glucose levels. Thirdly, PortusanaTM significantly modulates the activity of the PPAR gamma (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma), a cellular receptor regulating fatty acid storage and glucose metabolism, associated with modulating the insulin sensitivity of cells.
